Maya, our Meyers Parrot, died suddenly yesterday. She had been with us for 15 years, with her previous owner for five. We expected her to make it to 30 years.
Most people don’t know how much parrots like to cuddle, even very small ones like Maya who was about seven inches from beek to tail. Maya would even lay on her back in my had while I scratched her belly.
She liked to hang off of the bottom of a towel while I swung it around like a swing set. When I stopped, there would be a pause and then she would say “C’mon” and we’d start again.
Yesterday evening we found her sitting on the floor of her cage in position to lay an egg which she has only done twice before in the years she has been with us. There was blood on one of her feet and on several of her perches. We could not find a any sign of a wound on her foot so we think maybe she had become egg-bound. Many people don’t know that it can be very difficult, even life-threatening for bird to lay.
She died shortly after we found her.
