Sunday Salon: Some Things Maya Could Say

Some Things Maya Could Say:

  • I’m Maya.
  • Gimme kiss.
  • C’mon.
  • Let me out.
  • N.P.R.
  • Hi, baby.
  • Happy

Some Sounds Maya Could Imitate:

  • Crickets.
  • A kiss.
  • A whisper.
  • Our laughter.

Maya, our Meyers Parrot, died suddenly yesterday.  She had been with us for 15 years, with her previous owner  for five.  We expected her to make it to 30 years.

Most people don’t know how much parrots like to cuddle, even very small ones like Maya who was about seven inches from beek to tail.  Maya would even lay on her back in my had while I scratched her belly.

She liked to hang off of the bottom of a towel while I swung it around like a swing set.  When I stopped, there would be a pause and then she would say “C’mon” and we’d start again.

Yesterday evening we found her sitting on the floor of her cage in position to lay an egg which she has only done twice before in the years she has been with us.  There was blood on one of her feet and on several of her perches.  We could not find a any sign of a wound on her foot so we think maybe she had become egg-bound.  Many people don’t know that it can be very difficult, even life-threatening for bird to lay.

She died shortly after we found her.

  1. I’m so sorry. I had a cockatiel named Nikki whose loss was equally sudden. Many people don’t realize what personalities birds have, or how attached we can become to them. She surely had a good life with you.

  2. I am sad for you. We have a cockatiel we were given when he was a baby, and I would be very sad if he was gone. Shegecko says, “Read!”

  3. I’m so sorry. I lost one of my cats unexpectedly last weekend, so I know the shock of a sudden loss like that. I’ve never had a bird, because we’ve always had cats, but I fell in love with a friend’s cockatiels.

  4. I am so sorry. I did not know all that about birds or parrots and I am glad you shared that. She sounds like a wonderful companion. We lost a cat about a year ago, but we have never lost a pet suddenly. I am sure it is very hard.

  5. So sorry to hear about Maya. I’ve never had parrots, but they’re fascinating birds. The ones I’ve met have seemed so clever and sweet.
